“Get up, stop pretending!” my husband shouted as I lay frozen in the driveway. His mother accused me of ruining his birthday and seeking attention. But when the paramedic examined my legs, she immediately called the police.

 

 

I didn’t go home. I went to Megan’s. Officer Daniels helped me apply for a restraining order and provided me with resources—contacts, shelters, organizations—without any judgment, with unwavering professionalism. The paramedics, the neighbors, the hospital staff: strangers who took my suffering seriously, unlike my family and friends.

I am still recovering. I am still learning to trust my intuition.
