At my father’s funeral, my husband leaned over and whispered, “You’re not needed here.” I just smiled.

He sent me messages, called me, and even slipped notes under the door.

One day, he appeared at the entrance of Sarrià’s building. It was raining, and he was soaked, with an almost pathetic expression of despair.

“Alex, please… Let’s talk about it,” he said, approaching me.

Gabriel stood in front of me.

“They have no justification.”

“That’s my wife!” exclaimed Tomás.

I went out to the entrance of the building.

“Tomás,” I said, “I’m going to sign the divorce papers this week.”

He shook his head as if it were a bad joke.

“You can’t do this to me. I… I’ve done everything for us.”
