Yet, something in their gazes disturbs her: a silent strength, as if each person, from the father to the youngest child, were carrying much more than a static pose.

A child’s hand that tells another story

A few weeks later, Sarah returned to the photograph with a high-resolution scanner. She enlarged every detail: the fabrics, the hairstyles, the poses. Then she focused on the little girl in the center, about eight years old. Her hand rested along her dark dress.

And then she saw what no one had noticed before: around her wrist, deep, old, circular marks. Not an isolated scar, but a veritable ring of marked skin.
