My husband and I divorced after 36 years of marriage – At his funeral, his father drank too much and said to me, “You don’t even know what he did for you, do you?”

I sometimes saw him at children’s houses, at birthday parties, and at the grocery store.

He had lied to me and I had left him.

We nodded and chatted. He never confessed what he’d kept from me, but I never stopped wondering. So, even though we broke up more amicably than most couples, a large part of me felt like that chapter of my life remained unfinished.

Two years later, he died suddenly.

Our daughter called me from the hospital, her voice breaking.

Our son traveled for three hours and arrived too late.

He never confessed what he had hidden from me.
