After the music started again, my aunt found me near the entrance and hugged me tightly.

“I’m so proud of you,” she whispered.

Later that night she drove us to the cemetery.

The grass was damp and the sky had turned golden.

I knelt beside my father’s headstone and placed my hands on the marble.

“I did it, Dad,” I whispered. “You were with me the whole night.”

We stayed there until the sun disappeared.

My father never got to see me walk into that prom.

But I made sure he was there anyway.
