As I walked across the living room, Caleb looked up.
“Mom? Why were you shouting?”
“I dropped something,” I said quickly. “Stay with your brother and sisters.”
The attic ladder creaked as I went down it.
Daniel had reorganized the attic during his last relatively prosperous month. I wondered now what he could have possibly been hiding.
I searched for almost an hour before reaching the back wall.
There was a cedar chest there that I hadn’t opened for years.
The small key was suitable.
