The Silence Before the Storm

The Silence Before the Storm

My name is Evelyn Marlo, I am 31 years old, and last Tuesday, two days before Thanksgiving, I received a message from my mother that hit me like an unexpected cold snap.

“Evelyn, this year for Thanksgiving, we’ve decided to celebrate only with close family. We think it would be best if you made other plans. The reservation at Bella’s is for family only. – Mom”

I reread those words several times. Family. Real family.

Even though I expected it, the disappointment was very real. My older brother, Michael, is a successful lawyer. My younger sister, Ashley, is a nurse and a devoted mother of two adorable children. In my parents’ eyes, they represented the epitome of success. And me? I was the one who had dropped out of law school to venture into the uncertain world of mobile catering. A choice they had never truly understood.

Sitting in my office, I remained motionless for a few moments. Then, almost mechanically, I opened our internal booking system. I typed in a name: Thompson .

The information appeared on the screen: group of 12 people, Thursday 4:30 p.m., private dining room, festive menu with food and wine pairings.
