Further examination revealed something so rare that it was spoken of in hushed tones: a state where Lillian’s body had ceased to function normally, but continued to direct its remaining forces to keep the child alive, as if all the instincts she had ever possessed were converging toward a single purpose.
“Some refer to it as the ultimate maternal reaction,” explained one specialist. “That doesn’t exactly correspond to our understanding.”
Meeting with his son
Andrew returned to the nursery, where his son lay in soft light, his small fists clenched, his brow furrowed as if he were concentrating on something far beyond the room itself.
When the baby opened its eyes, Andrew instinctively stepped back, surprised by the intensity of their gaze, an awareness that persisted longer than expected.
A nurse glanced at the screen.
“He produces complex vocal patterns,” she said softly. “It’s unusual.”
Andrew swallowed with difficulty.
“What does that mean?”
She shook her head.
“We are still trying to understand.”
