During my grandmother’s 85th birthday party, my husband suddenly leaned towards me and whispered

What he had heard

Adam explained to me that he had gone to the toilet, located near the back corridor. On his way there, he had heard a voice in the cellar.

Not my grandmother’s.

Not that of a guest.

A male voice. Unknown.

And words that had frozen him in place.

“She can’t leave here. Not yet.”

I burst out laughing involuntarily.

“That’s ridiculous. Maybe it was the television.”

He shook his head.

“There’s no television in the cellar. And the voice was coming from downstairs.”

Then he added something that took my breath away:

“And there was a noise. Like someone was scratching.”
