The wait
The sirens sounded ten minutes later.
From the car, we saw two police cars pull up in front of the house. The guests got out, surprised. My mother looked panicked.
An officer entered the house.
I wanted to run. Explain. Cancel.
But it was too late.
The discovery
When the officer came out, his face was grim.
He approached us.
“Madam, we found something in the cellar. Something your family needs to know about.”
My heart stopped.
My grandmother’s cellar was supposed to be a simple storage space: boxes, old Christmas decorations, jars.
But what the police found… was not just a simple storage room.
Behind a metal shelf, there was a hidden door.
And behind that door, a small furnished room.
With a mattress.
A lamp.
Bottles of water.
And a woman.
