The appeal
We stopped a few streets from the house. Adam stared at the windshield, motionless.
“Call the police.”
“Are you serious?”
“Call them. Now.”
I was trembling. What could I say? That my husband had heard a strange noise during a birthday party?
But his fear was contagious. Primitive. Instinctive.
I dialed 911.
My voice was hesitant. Confused. I spoke of a possible danger, of a suspicious noise in the cellar of a house where an elderly person was present.
When I hung up, my hands were freezing.
