Twenty years ago, I saved a boy during a storm — Yesterday, he returned with an envelope that gave me chills.

 

The parents were watching.

Mr. Reed was embarrassed.

“We’ll take care of it,” he said.

“No,” I said. “You’ve been too careless.”

He forced a smile. “Thank you for your… help, but…”

He took my hand.

I cut it off. “Count your children twice next time.”

Andrew looked at me uncertainly.

“Are you leaving?” he asked.

“Yes, my dear,” I said softly.

He took my hand.

He hugged me.

“You won’t forget me?” he asked.

“Never,” I said.

He hugged me very tightly.
