Twenty years ago, I saved a boy during a storm — Yesterday, he returned with an envelope that gave me chills.

 

I filled the kettle.

He watched me.

I turned around.

“How did you find me?” I asked.

“What’s in this envelope?”

He hesitated to answer.

“Why are you here?” I asked. “And what’s in this envelope?”

He blinked rapidly.

“Aren’t you going to offer me some tea first?” he asked.

I froze.

“Then you tell me everything.”

I swallowed.

“Okay,” I said. “Then you tell me everything.”

“I know,” he replied.

“Andrew, stop protecting them.”

“I later discovered,” he said, “that the story had been changed.”
