Then, he looked up at me.
“You saved my life,” he said.
“It’s nothing,” I replied.
He shook his head.
“If you hadn’t been there,” he insisted, “I would be dead.”
“Don’t make it a debt,” I said.
He frowned. “Why not?”
“Because you’re a child,” I replied. “And that’s what adults are supposed to do.”
He shook his head.
“One day, I’ll return the favor,” he said.
